Introduction to the CIECI 2024

CONTEXT OF CIECI 2024

Globalization has experienced a significant surge as countries dismantle trade barriers and promote trade and investment facilitation, fostering robust international trade and investment flows over recent decades. While this has propelled global economic growth, it has also precipitated environmental degradation, spanning air, soil, and water pollution, alongside biodiversity loss. Notably, the World Trade Organization (WTO) reports that 20% - 30% of global carbon emissions stem from the production and transportation of import and export goods, exacerbating climate change.

In response, numerous nations have acknowledged the imperative of implementing green policies, integrating environmental objectives in economic policymaking. The European Union (EU) has notably endeavored to harmonize trade policies with environmental ambition, while the US administration has pledged to rejoin the WTO and revive multilateral environmental diplomacy. Some developed nations have proactively relocated supply chains overseas to mitigate carbon footprints and to lower labor and global sourcing costs resulting from globalization. In contrast, still, some developing countries have exhibited passiveness towards embracing green policies, often due to familiarity with lax environmental regulations and insufficient resources to pursue sustainability initiatives and goals.
